The citizenship test is a civics knowledge test that becomes part of the requirements for Swedish citizenship under the reform that takes effect on 6 June 2026. It measures a basic understanding of how Swedish society works — democracy, public authorities, the legal system and citizens' rights and obligations.
The test is developed and run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), while the Migration Agency reviews and decides on applications. The first sitting is a free trial test on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. A passing test is not the only way to meet the knowledge requirement — it can also be shown with, for example, Swedish school grades or a passed SFI course D.
The test is based on the official study guide Sverige i fokus (2026), divided into 13 chapters: geography and nature, democracy, how Sweden is governed, elections and parties, law and justice, the role of the media, human rights, the labour market, welfare, history, Sweden and the world, religion, and traditions and holidays. The focus is on understanding context — not memorising dates and legal sections by heart.
The most effective approach is regular practice with questions covering all 13 chapters. Short, focused sessions of 15–20 minutes a day work better than cramming right before the test. The test is held in Swedish, so it is valuable to learn the Swedish terms — even when you study the theory in your own language.
