How to register for the test — step by step

Updated June 2026 · 4 min read
Registration

You cannot register for the citizenship test on your own at any time. The process goes via both Migrationsverket and UHR. Here is what it looks like.

Step 1 – Migrationsverket examines your application

It all starts with your application for Swedish citizenship. It is Migrationsverket that examines the application and decides who needs to take the citizenship test.

Step 2 – You receive a referral letter

If you need to show knowledge of Swedish society and cannot do so in another way (for example through grades or SFI course D), you receive a letter from Migrationsverket that refers you to the test. Only then can you register.

Important: You can only register for the test if you have received a referral letter from Migrationsverket. So wait for the letter before you try to register.

Step 3 – Register with UHR

Registration for the citizenship test is done with UHR, on their registration page. There you first create an account and then register using your referral letter.

Deadline for the first test: Registration for the test on 15 August 2026 closes no later than 2 July 2026. Don't wait until the last minute. Upcoming test dates get their own registration dates.

Step 4 – Read your summons carefully

Before the test you receive a summons with practical information about the test day. Read it carefully — it tells you where and when to be present and what applies.

Step 5 – Test day

The first test is held on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm and is free of charge. Arrive in good time and follow the test staff's instructions during the day. If you need special support to be able to take the test, you can apply for accommodations (anpassning) — read more about the available accommodations on UHR's website.

Where do you turn with questions?

If you have questions about your citizenship case, contact Migrationsverket. If you have questions about the test itself, contact UHR.
